CODE is an International Design Conference organized by School of Fashion & Design at GD Goenka University. The conference will have talks by leading thinkers and masters in the field of design and sustainability.

This is the second edition of CODE themed: 3D Printing and Rapid Manufacturing. It aims at bringing together experts to discuss the technology, scope, present and the future of 3D Printing and Rapid Manufacturing. The conference also welcomes discussion on evolution of design and sustainability in design.

About School of Fashion & Design

The School of Fashion and Design (SoFD) was established in 2013 in strategic collaboration with Politecnico di Milano (PDM Milan, Italy). It offers industry oriented full time design education programs in Product Design, Fashion Design, Interior Design, and Communication Design.

The academic partnership with PDM ensures an unmatched international exposure to the students. There are regular visits of expert Politecnico faculty to the SoFD campus each semester for conducting workshops, as well as visit of SoFD students to Milan to the PDM campus and participating in workshops and exchange programs with the Politecnico di Milano campus in Milan (Italy).

Arturo Dell'AcquaBellavitis

  Arturo Dell'AcquaBellavitis is the current director of the Milan Triennale Foundation and Exposition. Apart from being the director of the Triennale, Bellavitis has his own architectural and design practice in Milan.
Bellavitis has been a lecturer, and is now full professor of Industrial design, Interior design, Textile design and Fashion design at Polytechnic University of Milan in Milan, Italy. At the same university, he is also the director of the Polidesign project, chairman of the Fashion Design department, and since 1990 he has been the director of the Masters Degree in Design Management and Interior Design.

  Praveen Rawal, Managing Director, Sales  - Southeast Asia and India of  Steelcase Asia Pacific, the global leader in the office furniture industry, and is responsible for overseeing the India and SEA business segment. Praveen Rawal, an MBA in Marketing, possesses over 20 years of sales and management  experience in the Asia Pacific region.­
Praveenbegan his journey with Steelcase in Delhi in 2004 and helped to developthe Steelcase India businesswhich led torapid growth in market share and success in the country. He managedthe sales and project teamsacross India including key cities such as Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Mumbaifor over 10 years.  Due to his immense success in India, Praveenwas promoted to lead the market andsales teams in Southeast Asia and India in 2015.  A strategic thinker andvisionary behind Steelcase’s imposing success in the region, Praveenand his entire team at Steelcase Indiaand Southeast Asiahave fortified the presence and sales of the brand in the Asia Pacific market.

Suresh Sethi
VP Whirlpool

  Suresh is the Vice President, Whirlpool Design, South Asia and Global Design Director for Air & Water. In this role he leads the design team in South Asia and leads all design work for Air and Water globally for Whirlpool Corporation.
He is a product designer and started his career at Philips Consumer Electronics in 1982, creating successful products in lighting, consumer electronics and home appliances. He went on to establish his own consultancy studio where he collaborated with some of the leading global companies.
He has been appointed by the Government of India as a member of India Design Council and is on the panel of jury for India Design Mark. He has been on the Advisory Committee of Urban Heritage Conservation, Mumbai and was honored to be on the ICSID roster of Design Advisors.

Dr. R. Gopichandran
Director, VigyanPrasar


  Dr R Gopichandran holds two doctoral degrees in the areas of microbial and chemical ecology. He serves as Director, VigyanPrasar an autonomous institutionof the Department of Science & Technology, Government of India. Most of his 28years of work was on integrated IEC strategies to improve environmentalperformance at the national, regional and global levels. He has a large numberof valuable publications and taught extensively in several institutions ofhigher learning including the CEPT University, Ahmedabad, IIT Bombay and IIM A.

Barbara Anne Jones

  Barbara joined Plymouth College of Art as Deputy Principal in 2011. Founded in 1856, Plymouth College of Art (PCA) is an independent specialist provider of education and professional formation in contemporary art, craft, design and media practices in the long tradition of European art schools.
PCA purpose as an independent specialist Art College is to provide a distinctive, innovative and supportive learning community in contemporary arts practice; to add value to the cultural, social and economic life of Plymouth and the South West region of England, and to develop a distinctive profile of work nationally and internationally.
Having initially undertaken a BA(Hons) Degree in Textiles and Fashion, specialising in Embroidery at Manchester Metropolitan University, Barbara has worked in both higher education and the creative industries for many years. She has also developed entrepreneurial experience as a self employed textile designer, maker, and owner of a range of related businesses.

Mike Pandey
Filmmaker and Conservationist



Mike Pandey is a crusader for the environment and for endangered species. He is nationally and internationally renowned for his high caliber and powerful films and is one of India's most accomplished and iconic nature filmmakers. Mike has waged a three-decade war to defend India's wildlife and environment. He was declared Hero of the Environment along with Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed and Cameron Diaz in the October 2009 issue of Time magazine. This is a global recognition for India's green initiative and conservation efforts. Mike has been the recipient of three Wildscreen Panda Award. He has been a recipient of many national and international awards.

His powerful films and they are a living proof of the difference one individual can make in bringing about changes locally, nationally and globally.

Dr KP Karunakaran
Institute Chair,
Professor, IIT Mumbai

  Dr. K.P. Karunakaran is presently an Institute Chair Professor of Mechanical Engineering in Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. He has over 32 years of professional experience: over 9 years in Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and 22 years in IIT Bombay. His research interests are CNC & automation, Rapid Manufacturing (RM) and Computer Graphics. He was a consultant to Mercedes-Benz Technology Centre in Summer 2000. He has been associated withFraunhofer institutes since 1998 through summer visits as a Humboldt Fellow. He has been a Visiting Professor in France since 2006. He launched OptiLOM, a pre-processor for LOM-RP, in collaboration with DaimlerChrysler and Materialize during EuroMold 2002. He has developed two new RM processes, both hybrid, viz., Hybrid Layered Manufacturing (HLM) and Segmented Object Manufacturing (SOM). HLM uses a unique 5-axis deposition, in layers as well as conformally, using MIG, TIG and LASER. His current Rapid Casting ambitions are 3D printing of sand, foam and ice which will be realized through the two projects he has won under MHRD’s "UchhatarAvishkarYojanahas (UAY)", of a total outlay of Rs. 10 Cr. He is simultaneously pursuing his passion on “Helicopters without Tail”.

  Disruptive Trans-functional Design & Development professional. Has over 24 years of experience in conceptualizing disruptive design, innovations, Designing, developing and validating Plastics and Metals products alike in the constant-changing automobile and white goods’ industries. Worked with Philips India , ERC, Tata Motors and presently with Hero MotoCorp.
Did Master in Tool Design & Manufacturing from DITE, Delhi and M Des from IIT K, Specializes in application and usage of different Additive manufacturing / Rapid tooling/ Digital Manufacturing specifically state of art prototyping solutions. Working with 3D printing technologies and state of art machines since last ten years.




  Shantanu has done his Btech in IT (information technology). He wants to make a difference in the current education sector by integrating technology with the existing classroom learning experience to enhance real time learning. He has a vision of an educated world rather than a learned one where people understand the true nature of knowledge. He has worked with various social, non profit organizations to understand the current education scenario and on the other side has had the corporate experience of running a company and what it takes to build one. He has always keen to learn and understand new innovations to create a better world.

  Parth has done his Btech in CSE (Computer Science Engineering). He has a great interest in web technologies and has a very logical approach is solving the various problems at hand. He has worked on various interfaces and technologies and believes that sustainable growth and future can co exist when technology and creativity goes hand in hand. He has a knack for improvisation and creating better implementation systems for the current technologies.

  Raghav has done is Btech in CSE (Computer Science Engineering). His hard work and compassion drives him to experiment with new technologies. He has created various curriculums in sync with various Boards through an extensive research. He has worked on core 3D Printing technology and has been up to date with various advancements in it. His passion is creating new technologies which can be used by masses and bring prototyping to households

The Selection Process

  • The best entries will be selected by the jury, on the basis of originality, creativity and appeal.
  • The designers shall create the selected entries into workable prototypes.
  • The workable prototypes of the selected entries will be exhibited at the Code 2016.
  • Our industry partners will award the final three entries.

Submission Guidelines

  • The design needs to be submitted as 300 dpi JPEG file with a brief write-up of your concept in less than 150 words along with the entry, along with the designer’s name, age and institute/company details.
  • Entries for the competition have to be in the send tocode@gdgoenka.ac.in.
  • Last date of submission of the design is 30th Aug 2016
  • Last date of submission of the final prototype is 31st Oct 2016
  • The designers have to bear all the expenses of their travel and sending the prototype at GD Goenka School of Fashion & Design.
  • Installation of the prototype/installation is entirely the responsibility of the designer.
  • Any damage to the prototype before the start of the event is entirely the responsibility of the designer

Traditional Crafts and New Technologies Plymouth College of Art is committed to maintaining traditional craft making skills alongside the innovative use of new technologies.

Recently the College has invested £8million in state of the art workshops for textiles, metals, wood, ceramics and glass. As part of this development the College also created one of the first FabLabs in the UK, providing opportunities for students and businesses to use a wide range of new digital manufacturing processes.

Interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary and cross-disciplinary practice together with the mix of traditional and new technologies to support design and make has created a unique creative learning environment. The challenge is to ensure students are able to develop as much confidence and agency in all elements of the making journey, able to subvert and invent processes, as much as develop new products.



3D Printing is a process of creating solid physical objects from solid, physical models from CAD designs. The students will be introduced to different aspects of 3D Printing mainly the Computer Aided Design, Slicing, 3D Printing of objects and hands on experience on different kind of technologies that are used in 3D Printing that are the 3D Scanner and 3D pens.



Registration fees for the conference along with the workshop (for students) are as follows:
